What is Fitra/ Zakat Al Fitr?

Fitra, also known as fidyah or Sadaqatul-Fitr or Zakat Al-Fitr, is an Islamic term used to provide financial support to those in need. Fitra is often understood as a charitable act that helps fulfill one’s obligations to those less fortunate or disadvantaged. It is usually paid before the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers; meanwhile, the minimum amount of Fitrana or Fitra per head is decided before Ramadan. All Muslims are responsible for paying a portion of their wealth to charity, and Fitrana or Zakat Al-Fitr is one way to fulfill this obligation. The amount of Fitra required varies depending on the individual’s circumstances. Still the Sadaqatul-Fitr, it is typically calculated based on the value of necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter. Fitra is typically paid at the time of the annual Eid al-Fitr holiday, which marks the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan. It is also a time when people are encouraged to show kindness and generosity towards others, and Fitra is one way to do this. However, if a person fails to pay Fitra before the time of Eid-ul-Fitr prayers, then they should pay it at the earliest.

How much is Fitrana (Zakat ul Fitr) per person?

At the time of the Prophet (PBUH) Fitrana (Zakat ul Fitr) would be given as 1 saa’. Therefore the quantity is described by Prophet (PBUH) as 1 saa’ of food (1 saa’ is equivalent to 4 madd). A madd is the amount that can be scooped up when one puts their hands together.

Who is it obligatory on to pay fitrana (zakat ul Fitr)?
